Bleeding disorders are changes in the woman's normal menstrual cycle. About 20% of all women have abnormal menstrual bleeding. There can be intermittent bleeding (metrorrhagia) or very heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia).

Common causes of bleeding disorders.

There can be many different causes for abnormal bleeding. It can be, for example:

  • Muscle knots (myomas)
  • Mucosal cells that have migrated in the uterine wall (adenomyosis)
  • Polyps in the uterus
  • Changes in the cervix (cervical cancer)
  • Changes in the lining of the uterus (atypia, endometrial cancer)
  • Changes in the ovaries (cysts)

But the most common cause is a hormonal disorder. This is quite normal.

How is the examination?

Our gynaecologist will usually do a gynaecological examination of you. Part of the examination may be a cell sample of the cervix and a bacterial sample. The gynaecological examination will clarify the cause so that a better quality of life can be achieved. It is important to investigate bleeding disorders to rule out more serious causes such as cancer. In most cases, it helps with a hormone treatment that will reduce both the amount of bleeding and pain. In some cases, surgery will be necessary.
