What are hormonal disorders?

The hormonal system is a broad topic. Hormonal imbalance can affect the menstrual cycle and can prevent pregnancy. Hormones act as messengers of information from the brain to the rest of the body. Some functions they control are blood pressure, blood sugar and the menstrual cycle. When it comes to menstruation, it is the hypothalamus in the brain that forms chemical substances, which in turn causes the pituitary gland to secrete hormones. These hormones affect the ovaries, and you get ovulation. Disorders in the hypothalamus or pituitary gland can cause an imbalance in hormone production. Hormone disorders can cause bleeding disorders and can make it difficult to get pregnant. Hormone production can also be affected by conditions in the ovaries, such as ovarian cysts and so-called polycystic ovary disease (PCOS).

What are the common symptoms?

Disorders of the ovaries can increase testosterone levels and cause increased hair growth, acne and weight gain.

How are hormonal disorders treated?

Changing diet and exercise can often be very effective. It is important to get a thorough gynaecological examination that clarifies the cause of the hormonal disorders.
