What is irregular menstruation?
Some hormones regulate the menstrual cycle. If the interaction between hormones and the ovaries is out of balance, you may have irregular menstruation. Irregular menstruation is not the same as bleeding that occurs randomly between a menstrual cycle.
It is common for women to menstruate at four-week intervals. That is four weeks from menstrual bleeding to the next. It is also common with both longer and shorter times between bleedings. Especially young women experience having irregular periods. In the first 5-6 years, this is relatively common. As the woman gets older, ovulation is often more regular.
Many things affect menstruation. Factors such as diet, general condition, stress and worries can affect menstruation. Low weight and lots of exercise can also affect the menstrual cycle. If you have a fair overview of your periods, you do not necessarily need to see a doctor. However, if it is not clear to you what is a menstrual period and what is accidental bleeding, then you should consult a doctor or gynaecologist.
